Messages of support

"Congratulations to all those planning and taking part in the Vanunu Freedom Ride. Mordechai is one of the unsung heroes of the world campaign against nuclear weapons, and he deserves every bit of support and encouragement that we can give him.”
Bruce Kent, Vice-President, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, January 2006

“I pledge my full support for the imaginative Vanunu Freedom Ride”
Tony Benn, Former Labour MP and Cabinet Minister, December 2005

"Vanunu is one of the great whistle-blowers and heroes of our time. Due to his bravery Israel's nuclear weapons were revealed to the world. The importance of his revelations can be seen by the lengths the Israeli authorities have gone to in order to punish him. The Israeli authorities have abducted, kidnapped and imprisoned him, placing Vanunu in solitary confinement and now upon his release they continue to harass him and restrict his movement. This must end. If Israel is the mature democracy that it claims to be then the Israeli authorities have to behave like a democracy that respects human rights."
Mark Thomas, Comedian and Political Activist, December 2005

“As Mayor of London I support the nuclear-free movement and those who work for a nuclear-free world wherever they are in the world, because as an international city, events in other countries have an impact on the lives of London’s diverse communities.
I, and other world city Mayors continue to make the case for nuclear disarmament to the United Nations through Mayor for Peace. Mordechai Vanunu’s struggle for a nuclear-free Middle East is important for us all. I was delighted when he was released from prison in April 2004 and am appalled by the continued restrictions put on his freedom by the Israeli authorities. I wish all those who participate in the Vanunu Freedom Ride every success in bringing the world’s attention to the importance of a nuclear-free Middle East in a nuclear-free world.”
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, January 2006

“I want to thank those planning to take part in the Vanunu Freedom Ride from Faslane to London. Vanunu’s stand against Israel’s nuclear programme was and still is truly heroic. Eighteen years in prison under extremely harsh conditions and the vindictive continued harassment and denial of freedom and human rights since the end of his sentence are testimony to his strength of character.
I hope the Vanunu Freeedom Ride will result in huge pressure on the British Government to make a stand for his human rights. It is also clear that Israel must have much more to hide about its nuclear programme.
We in South Africa, who know the cost to individuals in terms of liberty and lives lost in the cause of freedom, know what extraordinary strength of character Mordechai must have not only to live up to his belief to expose the lying and threatening conduct of his country, but to endure all that has been done to him since.”

Pump your pedals to the rhythm of :
“Full freedom for Vanunu now
No atom bombs in the Middle East
Full freedom for Vanunu now”

Dennis Goldberg, January 2006
Sentenced in the Rivonia Trial to four terms of life imprisonment with Nelson Mandela. Released after 22 years. Now back in free South Africa

The ongoing detention and harassment of Mordechai Vanunu - Israel's nuclear whistleblower - is an outrage which must not be allowed to continue unchallenged. Mordechai served his time in Ashkelon prison and must now be granted his full freedom of speech, movement and association. I welcome the Vanunu Freedom Ride and believe that as a result of this initiative, many more people will come to know of Mordechai Vanunu who has sacrificed so much and inspired so many.
Kate Hudson, Chair, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, February 2006

"As a strong supporter of freedom, Vanunu, and bicycles, I think it is entirely appropriate, at a time when freedom of speech worldwide is being undermined, that Mordechai's original position on the threat of nuclear weapons and their development should be reiterated wherever and whenever possible."
Michael Mansfield, QC

"Countries have the right to forbid the public expression of secret material by their employees and nationals. But individuals may on occasion have overriding rights to reveal secret information in the interests of wider considerations than those of patriotism narrowly construed. Mordechai Vanunu has been punished severely for his stand.
Now it seems there are further attempts to silence him and to continue to restrict him in order to maintain the cloud of secrecy around him and what he revealed. Yet it is of crucial importance that, in the present context of actual and potential proliferation of nuclear weapons, the truth about Israel's possession of nuclear weapons should be in the public arena and openly debated. I therefore support the aims of the Ride".
Michael Brearley - Psychoanalyst and ex-England cricketer.

“My apologies for being naïve, but I thought that when Mordechai was released in 2004 we would have stopped doing all this; I simply thought that when you were let out of prison you were free. How wrong I was.
Mordechai now represents the struggle for peace, the struggle against nuclear weapons, for a free Palestine, for free speech, and even for the freedom to be free once you have been freed. All this from someone who just wants to live a simple life. He is one of my heroes, and I pay respect to everyone on the Vanunu Freedom Ride. The struggle continues, by bike. Ride on.”
Benjamin Zephaniah – Poet

“I have been a supporter of Mordechai Vanunu ever since his illegal abduction from Rome. It seems to me that the restrictions placed on him since his release are pointless, since any nuclear information he may have is obsolete. They are also vindictive, since he has served his sentence, under harsh conditions.”
The Lord Hylton –Member of the House of Lords

"
Trident Ploughshares, a direct action group campaigning against Britain's nuclear weapons system, warmly supports the efforts of the Vanunu Freedom Ride. We salute your endeavours to raise awareness of Mordechai Vanunu's present situation. We demand that Israel restores his full human rights and ceases to prevent him leaving Israel and speaking freely to whom he wishes."

"Mordechai Vanunu deserves our support. It was a courageous thing that he did. By highlighting the production of nuclear weapons at Dimona, more than twenty years ago, he brought the world's attention to the perilous situation in the Middle East, long before both of the Iraq wars, and the ongoing negotiations with Iran. For this he has been punished mercilessly by the Israeli authorities, who continue to harrass him and deny him his civil liberties. The world must put pressure on Israel to allow him to leave the country and resume his life. It does them no credit that they continue this vindictive and spiteful treatment. He has more than paid the penalty in full. Let him go now!"
